Love speaks a language whose only barrier is a person’s willingness to share it. Love looks like ministering to the youth with interests in AFRICANA arts, and the African diaspora. Love looks like creativity and community. Love looks like a willingness to expose vulnerability with care, nurturing the brunt of loss, and celebrating the freedom of its highs. Love looks like caregiving, presence, and most importantly commitment.
One thing FashionAFRICANA is committed to is its work, its artists, its programming, and its intention behind it all. PSALM 37:25 states, “I have never seen the righteous one forsaken”, and its parallels to the arts is uncanny, as I have never seen a creative without a desire for community.
For every Pittsburgh creative and beyond, you are in luck if you’ve been itching for community as the warmer days make their presence felt. The launch of “Open Studio” is here, a “new cultural experience presented by FashionAFRICANA as part of its AFRICANA initiative”.
This free, and special affair, occurring on Thursday, June 19, 2025 (Juneteenth) features “the premiere of AITNEMED, a powerful new work by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Kontara Morphis. AITNEMED — dementia spelled backward — draws from Kontara’s personal journey as a caregiver to her mother, offering a moving reflection on memory, love, and resilience through dance.”
“Open Studio” will also offer guests a behind-the-scenes look into dynamic works in progress of Black creatives across all mediums. This will be a wonderful opportunity to thrive in conversation, connectivity, and the celebration of Black creativity and ingenuity.
Light hors d'oeuvres will be provided, and donations to support FashionAFRICANA programming and more events like this one can be made here.
